Parameterization of Ice Growth for Numerical Calculations of Cloud Dynamics

چکیده
Parametric cquations dcscribing the growth of ice particles in the range 10-”-1 g are presented. Three subrangcs (10-11-5 X 5 X 10-s-10-4, and 10-4-1 g) are used. Thc parametric equations were developed with the aid of a complex method of calculating ice-particle growth. Two approaches to using the parametric equations in a simulation resembling a natural cloud situation are described. One method breaks the ice-particle spectrum into threc components, the sizes of each being monitored. The other assumes a size distribution tha t can be characterized by a “growth-median” size, so tha t only one size need be monitored to describe the rate of growth. The parametric method is compared with more complicated methods in a simulated cloud environment, and the results are regarded as satisfactory.

Testing of the Modified Anomalous Diffraction Approximation with T-Matrix Calculations for Hexagonal Columns
In the treatment of ice cloud radiative properties, two approaches have been taken: 1) parameterization of exact results from electro-dynamic scattering theory in terms of bulk microphysical properties (e.g., ice water content and effective size), and 2) parameterization of electrodynamic scattering theory itself in terms of explicit microphysical properties (e.g., size distribution parameters,...
متن کاملA New Parameterization of an Asymmetry Factor of Cirrus Clouds for Climate Models
The aspect ratio (AR) of a nonspherical ice particle is identified as the key microphysical parameter to determine its asymmetry factor for solar radiation. The mean effective AR is defined for cirrus clouds containing various nonspherical ice particles. A new parameterization of the asymmetry factor of cirrus clouds in terms of AR and mean effective size, Dge, is developed for solar radiation....
متن کاملA comprehensive parameterization of heterogeneous ice nucleation of dust surrogate: laboratory study with hematite particles and its application to atmospheric models
A new heterogeneous ice nucleation parameterization that covers a wide temperature range (−36 to−78 C) is presented. Developing and testing such an ice nucleation parameterization, which is constrained through identical experimental conditions, is important to accurately simulate the ice nucleation processes in cirrus clouds. The ice nucleation active surface-site density (ns) of hematite parti...
متن کاملOn the relationship of polar mesospheric cloud ice water content, particle radius and mesospheric temperature and its use in multi-dimensional models
The distribution of ice layers in the polar summer mesosphere (called polar mesospheric clouds or PMCs) is sensitive to background atmospheric conditions and therefore affected by global-scale dynamics. To investigate this coupling it is necessary to simulate the global distribution of PMCs within a 3-dimensional (3-D) model that couples large-scale dynamics with cloud microphysics. However, mo...
متن کاملMicrophysical and Dynamical Influences on Cirrus Cloud Optical Depth Distributions
Cirrus cloud inhomogeneity occurs at scales greater than the cirrus radiative smoothing scale (~100 m), but less than typical global climate model resolutions (~300 km). Therefore, calculating cirrus radiative impacts in global climate models requires an optical depth distribution parameterization. Radiative transfer calculations are sensitive to optical depth distribution assumptions (Fu et al...
